This is what Scott Harrison is doing at Charity: Water. The potential for this organization to change the world is simply remarkable. Scott believes we have the potential, in our lifetime, to give one billion people on this planet clean water. Charity: Water is not the reason we will achieve that potential. The people who will take an active part in making it happen will achieve it. Charity: Water simply provides the platform and infrastructure to make it happen, and then gives us real, tangible proof of what we can achieve.

Charity: Water, unlike other charities, doesn’t want us to just send checks. It wants us to do something more. It wants us to invest a little time and energy into inspiring our friends to help do something big in the world. If you go to charitywater.org, you'll find all the tools you need to donate your birthday to this cause. All you have to do is tell your friends to donate the value of your years to Charity: Water instead of giving you a birthday present. In other words, if you’re turning 27, call and email your friends, post it on Facebook and tell everyone at work to donate $27 to help you build a well. If you raise $5,000, it will pay for a well to be built in Africa or Southeast Asia.

Then comes the proof.

Charity: Water will send you a picture of the actual well you built. You get a photograph of the well with your name inscribed on it so you can see what you’re capable of in the world. It’s proof. And that proof will serve to inspire others to do the same. They, too, will donate their birthdays. They, too, will spend a little time to encourage their friends to replace a birthday present with the building of a well. And it grows. And compounds. Until all of us can see, from this little proof, our potential.

Do something for someone. See what you’re capable of. See the impact you can have on someone else’s life. And that proof will inspire you to keep doing things for others. Because if you keep doing things for others, others will start doing things for you. And that is when our potential is realized. We can each achieve amazing things over the course of our lives not because we’re working to our full potential but because others are helping us to do so.
